The TIGP 2023 fall semester will open to applications worldwide from November 2022 to February 2023 (GMT+8).

TIGP is a Ph.D. degree program jointly organized by Academia Sinica and top national research universities in Taiwan. It provides an all-English and advanced research-orientated environment for educating young academic talents from Taiwan and abroad. It offers thirteen sub-programs, and to learn more about a program of your interest, please select it from the list and proceed to the program’s introduction and requirements for admission.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all arrivals must be quarantined in a hotel. Regarding the quarantine cost, the TIGP Office will provide partial reimbursement (utmost NT $22,000) for the TIGP new students after the quarantine period. Students must follow the required steps to apply for the reimbursement. 

As part of your preparation of moving to Taiwan, the TIGP Office suggests each student to bring NT $60,000 (~ USD 2,150) to pay for direct costs such as tuition, fees, housing, and food & indirect costs such as books, supplies, personal miscellaneous expenses, and transportation costs.

Language Proficiency Requirement

English proficiency certificate required

  • Exception conditions for English proficiency certificate:​
    • Not required for applicants from English-speaking countries*
    • Not required for applicants whose previous degree is from English-speaking countries*  (the length of study is at least 2 years)
    • Not required for applicants whose previous degree is entirely taught in English (the length of study is at least 2 years; proof required)
  1. TOEFL: Scores 79-80 on the Internet-based TOEFL (TOEFL-iBT) or higher, taken within the past 2 years, is required (Our institution CODE & NAME are: 7142 Academia Sinica)
  2. IELTS: Score 5.5 or higher, taken within the past 2 years, is required
  3. GEPT: Instead of TOEFL and IELTS, applicants in Taiwan may take the General English Proficiency Test (GEPT) administered by the Language Training and Testing Center. Applicants are required to submit their High-intermediate level certificate when applying for admission

 All above test scores must be taken within the past two years.

Application documents

  • Degrees certificate (includes bachelor and master): (If the certificate is not in English, the English translation is required)
  • Transcript of records (including explanation of grading system): If the transcript is not in English, the English translation is required
  • Syllabi of the Core Courses: On a separate sheet of paper, briefly describe the advanced courses you have taken that are most relevant to your field of study.  List the major topics covered, the names of the professors who taught these courses, and the authors fo the textbooks that were used.
  • Passport (if applicable)
  • Taiwan Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) (if application)
  • Passport-size Photograph: in color and less than 6 months old, showing a close-up shot of the head and shoulders, and without wearing a hat

  • Recommendation letter x 3 (one required from advisor)
  • Statement of purpose 
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores in General Test is required. However, an applicant who fails to meet this requirement may submit additional criteria for committee evaluation. Subject Test is optional and one of the following subjects: Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, or Biology is strongly recommended

**GRE substitution: If under special circumstances the test is not taken, some proof of applicant's competency might be considered. This proof should be more than just recommendation letters and transcripts, for example, documents like award record, exam scores of national or international level, scientific publications, etc. will be helpful.
The admission committee will decide whether the proof is strong enough to support the application.**

If the application documents are not complete, the program has the right to neglect the application.
 

We will have a 9-day Lunar New Year holiday (starting from 29 January to 6 February) in 2022. All the applicants have to submit the application documents before 6 February 2022.
