PhD Position In TUM Munich, Germany

PhD In Germany

With the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Research Neutron Source (FRM II) in Garching near Munich, the Technical University of Munich operates one of the most powerful and modern neutron sources worldwide. As a service facility for science and a service provider for industry, we occupy a leading position in the field of research with neutrons and their technical use. Within the framework of the bilateral cooperation program between the Laboratories Léon Brillouin (Paris-Saclay, France) and the Technical University of Munich, we are looking for a PhD student (m/f/d). The aim is to obtain a double degree, i.e., the doctoral program will be carried out in parallel at the Physics Department of the Technical University of Munich and Université Paris-Saclay (France).

Your field of activity for doctoral position

Lithium - ion batteries as energy storage devices are ubiquitous and their use spans a variety of applications: from small portable devices, electric vehicles to local storage solutions for renewable energy sources. With respect to the breadth of applications, there is an ongoing need and active research landscape to continue to improve performance, particularly cost efficiency, safety, durability, and energy/power density of the systems.

The focus of the PhD is to characterize the structure of the liquid electrolyte as well as the solvents typically used in today's Li-ion batteries, i.e., in particular cyclic carbonate esters and their mixtures. The long- and short-range ordering in these materials will be determined using neutron and X-ray scattering methods. The macroscopic properties of the solvents such as crystal structure, phase stability, and ion transport will be systematically investigated by combining neutron and X-ray scattering/X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, and impedance spectroscopy at ambient and non-ambient conditions. The structural data obtained will be used as a basis for electrolyte composition optimization and electrolyte testing in real Li-ion batteries.

Your profile

You have a degree (diploma, master) in physics, chemistry or materials science. Ideally, you have experience in the application of scattering methods on solids or liquids. You have good communication skills, enjoy working in a team and in an international environment. Proficiency in written and spoken English is a requirement. Knowledge of French (also basic knowledge) is an advantage.

For more information about the job, please contact Dr. Anatoliy Senyshyn (anatoliy.senyshyn@frm2.tum.de).

The high safety standard of our facility requires the nuclear law reliability of the employees. For this purpose, appropriate checks are carried out.

Our offer

At FRM II, a flexible working time model with electronic time recording applies, in which overtime is fully compensated. Other benefits include a company pension plan and, in addition to 30 vacation days, two additional days off (12/24 & 12/31), as well as a supportive staff council.

As an employee of FRM II, you can benefit from many other TUM offers, such as

- the health offers of the TUM

- Language courses in 11 different languages and other TUM-internal further education and training opportunities

- TUM childcare (subject to availability)

- the discount for the MVV job ticket

The position is paid according to TV-L and is limited to 3 years. Severely disabled persons will be given preference in the case of essentially equal suitability. The TUM aims to increase the proportion of women. Applications from women are therefore expressly welcomed.
